Economic analysis and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
Prior to large-scale production, the environmental impacts of the new pathways for bioenergy and biomaterials production from microalgae have to be assessed. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is particularly adapted to this purpose, since it adopts a cradle-to-grave perspective, i.e. looking at resource depletion and substance emissions of all the processes required to achieve the production and use of the concerned product. Algal-based biorefineries have been proposed as a interesting way to improve the economic viability of microalgal-based biofuels, as many coproducts could be valorized. In this perspective, a particular attention will be paid in Working Group 5 of this Action on how to assess environmental impacts when performing a LCA study of biorefinery systems.
